Creating a Background in Avantage

Quick Overview #

Before we can start to peak model, we must first create a region of analysis and an appropriate background. When you have a dataset selected, you can use the peak add button to start creating backgrounds.

Adding a Smart Background #

When you open the peak window, you can move the region markers around the peak of interest and add a region with smart background selected. Avantage will apply a background it thinks is most suitable.

Adding Multiple Backgrounds #

If you have multiple peak in the same spectrum, you can add a second background simply by moving the peak markers to the second peak and changing the element in the peak details section. Click add to insert the second.

Background Average #

Background average controls how wide a data range Avantage will use to set the higher and lower background points.

Peak Details #

You can use the ‘use predefined energy range’ option to add in peak energies and automatically apply ranges. Take care, you may put a background marker in the middle of another peak. If you have an odd looking background, click on the peak in the peak table and you can then drag and drop the background edges to improve the fit.
